The irradiation facility harnesses gamma rays emitted from a Co-60 source to eliminate all microorganisms within the tank.

Gamma rays induce a process known as ionization by removing electrons from the atoms of substances. This phenomenon causes free electrons to detach DNA molecules from living organisms, proving lethal to microorganisms such as bacteria, yeast, and mold.
